Analytical Planetary Chemistry

In order to understand the nucleosynthesis, formation and evolution of the solar system and Earth quantitatively, we are investigating (1) basic processes such as magma and fluid formation accompanied by elemental redistribution and isotopic fractionation, and (2) the timing of each event by various dating methods. For these purposes, many elemental and isotopic analytical methods, as well as low and high P-T experimental methods have been developed and employed.

For example, quantitative analyses of 58 elements are available using ICP-QMS and ICP-SFMS. Isotope ratios of B, O, S, Ar, Sr, Ce, Nd, Hf, Os, Pb, Ra, Th and U can be measured precisely by stable isotope, rare gas, positive and negative thermal ionization and multi-collector ICP mass spectrometers, making it possible to date samples by K-Ar, Rb-Sr, La-Ce, Sm-Nd, Lu-Hf, Re-Os and U-Th-Pb methods. Furthermore, spot analyses (micron scales) of trace elements by SIMS, dating of zircons by the U-Pb method and determination of B-Li-Pb isotope analyses in glass inclusions using HR-SIMS.

These allow us to develop a "comprehensive" understanding of Earth and solar system. Using the sophisticated methods available at ISEI, we can extract maximal information from small samples using a combination of petrology, mineralogy, geochronology and geochemistry based on sample observation and description, classical bulk analyses and state-of-the-art spot analyses for determination of elemental abundances and isotope ratios. We have the capability of analyzing tiny run products of high P-T experiments by the spot analytical techniques and extremely small amounts of powder or minerals from asteroid materials that are expected to be brought by space crafts with the next two years.
